## Ready when they can

- Write a one-sentence limit for a real situation (lending money, late-night messages, being volunteered for someone else's work) with one reason and one alternative
- Repeat the limit after a push-back without adding excuses or dropping it
- Tell apart a limit that is theirs to set from a request that is really someone else's decision

## Lesson: Saying no and meaning it

A boundary is a rule you set for your own time, money, or attention. Name the limit in one sentence, give one real reason, and offer an alternative when you can. Write your line before you need it, for messages after eleven or lending money.

**Example.** Maya tells a friend she does not answer messages after eleven because she needs sleep, and offers to reply at breakfast. Thank them, state the no once, then stop talking. Piling on excuses invites debate about each one.

When the friend pushes, repeat the same line word for word with no new reasons. Repetition shows you mean it, while fresh excuses hand over things to argue with. Friends who respect the second hearing were worth keeping.

**Tip.** Sort requests into yours to decide and theirs to accept. Your money, your time, your body, and your inbox at night are yours to set. How they feel about your limit is theirs to carry, not yours to fix.

**Recap.** One sentence, one reason, one alternative, then the same words again if they push.
