## Lesson: Reading the Undercurrents in Your Friend Group

Every friend group sends two kinds of messages. There are the words people say. Then there is the subtext underneath: a look, a pause, or a joke that lands too hard. Some people call this the undercurrent, the real feeling running under the surface. Picking up on it means noticing tone, body language, and what changes the moment you walk into a room.

*(drawing: Cues often come in a short chain. The joke stops, eyes shift sideways, then the room goes quiet. The middle step, the shift in eyes, is the easiest one to miss.)*

**Example.** Priya sits down at lunch just as two friends stop laughing and go quiet. She feels the sting of being left out of something. Instead of guessing why and telling her own theory to someone else, she waits for a quiet moment and asks one friend directly: 'Hey, is something going on?' That is assertive: calm, clear, and honest about what she noticed. Snapping 'Why do you two always whisper about me?' in front of everyone would be aggressive: loud, blaming, and meant to make someone feel small.

**Tip.** Gossip can feel like a shortcut to belonging. Trading a secret makes two people feel close, fast. But it costs trust, and a group remembers who talks about whom. Before you repeat something, ask yourself if you would say it to that person's face. If the answer is no, that is a clue you are trading trust for a quick sense of closeness.

Every group has people who set the mood and others who follow along. Going along with something that feels wrong, just to stay in with that crowd, trades your own values for a spot in the group, and that trade rarely feels good afterwards. If you are the one being left out, tell a friend you trust, or an adult, how it felt. If you see someone else being frozen out, sitting with them for five minutes matters, even when you cannot fix the whole group.

**Recap.** Read the undercurrent, choose assertive over aggressive, and remember gossip trades trust for a quick sense of belonging.
