# Systemic Inequality and Allyship

Move beyond 'treating everyone the same' to understand that structural advantages and disadvantages exist regardless of individual effort or intention; explore concrete examples of systemic inequality (educational attainment gaps, gender pay gap, representation in leadership); distinguish between individual prejudice and structural discrimination; understand intersectionality — how multiple aspects of identity interact; develop informed compassion rooted in evidence rather than pity; explore what being a genuine ally means in practice

## Lesson: Systemic Inequality and Allyship

You already know that equality means giving everyone the same thing, and equity means giving each person what they actually need for a fair chance. Systemic inequality is about where those unequal starting points come from. It means some groups face extra barriers built into schools, workplaces and daily life, before anyone has even tried anything. Tryouts for a school team can show this when some children start with less access.

There is a difference between one person being unfair and a whole system being unfair. Prejudice is when a person judges someone unfairly. Structural discrimination is bigger: it's when rules, habits and history stack up so a whole group ends up with fewer chances, even if no single person meant any harm.

*(drawing: In many large companies, most top leaders are men, even though roughly half of all workers are women. That gap did not happen because women try less hard.)*

**Example.** Amara is a Black girl from a family with less money than most of her classmates. She doesn't face just one barrier. Being a girl, being Black, and having less money can combine and create challenges that are different from facing any one of those alone. This overlapping effect is called intersectionality.

Being a real ally means more than feeling sorry for someone. Listen to people's experiences, learn the facts about the barriers they face, and use whatever advantage you have, like your voice or your time, to support fair changes.

**Recap.** Same rules do not always mean a fair start, and real allyship means understanding the barriers people face and acting on that understanding.
