# Vaping, Smoking and the Decision in the Moment

The decision is rarely made in the abstract; it is made once, quickly, with people watching. Covers what nicotine does to a developing brain, why dependence forms faster than expected, what is and is not known about vaping, and how to have an answer ready before the moment arrives.

## Ready when they can

- Explain what nicotine does to reward and attention, and why an adolescent brain forms dependence faster
- Separate what is established about vaping from what is still being measured
- Say what you would actually reply in a specific situation, and why a prepared answer works better than a reason

## Lesson: Your answer, decided before Friday

Nicotine hijacks the brain reward circuit and sharpens attention for a short while. Your brain is still building, so strong habits and cravings lock in faster than in adults. One try can be the start of the habit, not a free sample.

Smoking harms are well measured. Vaping avoids smoke, but its aerosol still carries nicotine and irritants, and long-term effects are still being tracked. Learn your triggers too: the mates, the moments and the feelings that spark the urge.

**Example.** Pressure rarely sounds like a threat. It sounds like a dare, a joke at your refusal, or silence while all eyes land on you. Name the tactic in your head and it loses half its pull. Adults also spot smoke fast: smell on clothes, extra coughs, slipping grades.

**Tip.** Pick one short line that fits you and practise it out loud before the night. Pair it with an exit, like going to get a drink. Calm body language sells it: eye contact, steady voice, no long excuses to argue with.

**Recap.** Nicotine hooks young brains fast, vaping is not settled science, and one rehearsed line beats any speech invented under staring eyes.
