# Accurate Mass and Isotope Patterns as Formula Evidence

## Lesson: From an exact mass to a formula

Nuclides do not have whole number masses, and that quirk is a gift. Measured to enough decimal places, a mass belongs to only one molecular formula, because each atom set sums to its own exact total. So start every assignment by matching the accurate mass against candidate formulas of the same nominal mass and keeping the one that fits.

**Example.** Isotope peak patterns add a second independent check on which elements are present. Each element blends its isotopes by natural abundance, and a single atom of one isotope carries its own exact mass. A cluster of roughly nine to six to one flags two chlorine atoms, since that is the fingerprint their two isotopes paint. Read the pattern to count chlorine, bromine, or sulfur atoms.

Two arithmetic checks then test each surviving candidate. First, build the molecular weight by listing each element, multiplying its atomic mass by its atom count, and adding the results: water H2O gives about 1 plus 1 plus 16, which is 18. Second, step from the empirical formula to the molecular one by dividing the true molecular mass by the empirical formula mass and scaling every subscript by that whole number.

**Tip.** Finish with the rings and double bonds count plus the nitrogen rule. The count turns a formula into a degree of unsaturation that the structure must match, so reject candidates whose count the structure cannot supply. The nitrogen rule adds one more filter: an odd nominal mass points to an odd count of nitrogen atoms, and it holds for neutral molecules built from the common elements.
