# Animal Body Plans: Symmetry, Cavities and the Deep Splits

The major animal groups are told apart by a handful of features fixed early in development: how many tissue layers form, whether there is a body cavity, and which opening the gut makes first. Those features are why a sea urchin is a closer relative of a fish than of a clam.

## Lesson: Sorting animals by their embryos

A short list of embryo features sorts most animals. Symmetry comes first: sponges have none, jellyfish and kin are radial like pie slices, and most animals, including you, are bilateral with mirror halves. Tissue layers come next: jellyfish build from two layers, while most animals add a middle layer that makes muscle and complex organs.

Then check the body cavity, a fluid filled space that cushions organs: some animals have none, some a partial one, and many a true coelom. Last comes the deep split: in protostomes the embryo first opening becomes the mouth, while in deuterostomes it becomes the anus and the mouth forms later.

**Example.** A sea urchin looks like a clam cousin, round and slow, but its embryo marks it a deuterostome. That puts the urchin nearer to fish than to clams on the tree. Early embryo traits outrank adult looks.

**Tip.** When forms match but the tree disagrees, suspect convergence: similar pressures sculpt similar bodies twice. Trust the shared embryo features to place the animal.
