## Ready when they can

- Names at least 4 animal record-holders with their record (fastest, biggest, tallest, smallest, etc.)
- Compares an animal's size or ability to a familiar reference
- Shows enthusiasm for superlative animal facts

## Lesson: Animal record-holders

Every animal is special. But some animals hold big records. A record means being the most of something.

**Example.** The cheetah is the fastest land animal. It can run as fast as a car on the highway. Nothing on land can catch it.

**Example.** The blue whale is the biggest animal ever. It is even bigger than the biggest dinosaur. One blue whale is as long as three school buses.

*(drawing: A giraffe is taller than a house, and much taller than you.)*

**Tip.** The bee hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world. It is smaller than your thumb. Try pairing each animal with something you know well. That makes the record easy to remember.

**Recap.** Fastest, biggest, tallest, or smallest, animals break records all over the world.
