Some animals can fly. Every continent, even icy Antarctica, has animals suited to the conditions where they live. Some can fly, but also land to rest. An animal's home is its habitat. A habitat must meet the animal's needs, including food, water and rest. **Example.** Mia reads about a camel in a desert, a parrot in a rainforest and a shark in the ocean. She also reads about penguins in Antarctica. These animals live in different places. To match place cards with animals, find the animal for each place. Name the animals in the same order as the place cards. *(drawing: Each word card pairs an animal with a place in Mia's reading.)* A continent is a very large area of land. Animals live on every continent, even icy Antarctica. Some penguins live there. Other penguins live in warmer places. A cold place can be an animal's home too. *(drawing: These cards pair animals with movement. A parrot also needs somewhere to land.)* Body parts give clues about how animals move. Fins help fish swim. Wings help parrots fly. Not every animal with wings can fly. Penguins use their wings to swim. A body part is a clue about movement, not an exact address. A claim about all animals must fit every animal. To check it, look for an example that does not fit. One such example is enough to show that the claim needs changing. Animals on every continent does not mean animals in every spot. A continent contains many places. Not seeing animals in one small patch does not show that the whole continent has none. **Recap.** Animals live in different homes and on every continent. Some can fly.
