## Ready when they can

- Defines biodiversity at the species, genetic, and ecosystem levels
- Explains why high biodiversity makes an ecosystem more stable and resilient to disruption
- Identifies at least three human activities that reduce biodiversity
- Discusses why biodiversity loss matters for humans as well as wildlife

## Lesson: Biodiversity and why variety keeps ecosystems strong

Biodiversity means the variety of life in a place. It has three levels. Species biodiversity counts how many different kinds of living things there are. Genetic biodiversity looks at the differences within one species, like how not all foxes share the exact same traits. Ecosystem biodiversity counts the variety of habitats, such as forests, rivers, and coral reefs, across a region.

*(drawing: A small patch of rainforest holds many different species. A field of only one crop holds very few.)*

**Example.** Think about the food webs you already know. In a rainforest, hundreds of species hunt, graze, and pollinate in different ways. If a disease wipes out one kind of frog, other predators still have plenty to eat, and other pollinators still visit the flowers. The web holds together. In a field with only one crop, if a pest attacks that one plant, there is nothing to fall back on. High biodiversity gives an ecosystem backup options, so it can bend without breaking.

People threaten biodiversity in several ways. Habitat destruction happens when forests, wetlands, or grasslands are cleared for farms, roads, or cities, leaving species with nowhere to live. Pollution poisons water, soil, and air that species depend on. Invasive species arrive in new places, often carried by people, and outcompete native species for food and space. Climate change shifts temperatures and rainfall faster than many species can adapt to.

**Tip.** Biodiversity loss isn't just bad news for wildlife. People rely on biodiverse ecosystems for food crops, clean water, new medicines, and air to breathe. A weaker, less varied ecosystem is riskier for everyone who depends on it, including us.

**Recap.** Biodiversity is the variety of life at the species, genetic, and ecosystem level, and losing it makes ecosystems more fragile for wildlife and people alike.
