# Bone, Cartilage and the Mechanics of a Joint

Bone is a living connective tissue that is constantly rebuilt in response to load, which is why it heals and why it thins when unloaded. A joint is then a mechanical problem: the shapes of the surfaces set what movements are possible, and the muscles that cross it set which ones happen.

## Ready when they can

- Explain bone remodelling in terms of the two cell types that build and remove matrix
- Relate the structure of a named synovial joint to its permitted range of movement
- Work out the force in a muscle from the geometry of the lever it acts on

## Lesson: Living bone and clever joints

Bone is living tissue under constant rebuild. Builder crews lay down new matrix while remover crews dissolve old matrix, and their balance follows the load: loaded bone strengthens, unloaded bone thins. That is why fractures heal and why idle limbs weaken.

A synovial joint is a fluid filled capsule around cartilage capped bone ends, strapped by ligaments. Cartilage coats the surfaces, absorbs shock, and lets bones glide with very little friction. Remember the straps: tendons tie muscle to bone, while ligaments tie bone to bone.

**Example.** Joint shape sets the moves. A ball and socket swings widely, a hinge bends one way, and flat faces glide. The shoulder carries little ligament support, so it ranges hugely, while the hip wears strong ligaments that trade range for steady standing and weight bearing.

**Tip.** Treat a joint as a lever with its fulcrum at the joint: load on one side, muscle pull on the other. Balance the two turning effects to work out the muscle force.

**Recap.** Bone rebuilds toward load, and each joint shape plus its straps decides the allowed moves.
