# Catalytic Cycles: Tracing Steps Around a Closed Loop

Chaining the elementary steps into a closed loop turns a metal complex into a catalyst that runs indefinitely. Reading a cycle means checking that every intermediate has a sensible count and that the loop closes back on the starting species.

## Ready when they can

- Traces a full cycle and names each elementary step in turn
- Checks the electron count and oxidation state at every intermediate around the loop
- Identifies the turnover-limiting step and explains what would raise the rate
- Explains how ligand choice steers the selectivity of the product in a stated cycle

## Lesson: Walking around a catalytic loop

A reaction that looks like one step often runs as several small steps. Each small step is an elementary step, and the full list of them is the mechanism. Some species are made in one step and used up in a later step. These intermediates cancel out of the overall equation, exactly like the metal complex in a catalytic loop, which is consumed and then regenerated so the loop closes.

**Example.** Read a palladium cross-coupling loop by walking around it. Name each elementary step in turn, and at every intermediate check the electron count and the oxidation state. Then add all the steps together: the intermediates must cancel, and the sum must match the overall balanced equation. If the sum differs, the proposed cycle is incomplete or wrong.

**Tip.** Find the slowest step first, because it sets the pace of the whole loop like a narrow doorway. To raise the rate, speed up that step, for example by changing the ligands around the metal or by warming the mixture. Choose ligands with care as well, since the ligand set steers which product path wins.

**Recap.** Name each step, check every count, and fix the slowest step first.
