# Classifying Rainforest Organisms

Classify rainforest organisms into major groups — mammals (jaguars, monkeys, bats), birds (toucans, macaws, hummingbirds), reptiles (snakes, lizards, caimans), amphibians (tree frogs, poison dart frogs), insects (butterflies, ants, beetles), and plants (trees, epiphytes, ferns) — using observable features to sort them

## Ready when they can

- Sort at least eight rainforest organisms into correct groups: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, or plants
- State the key feature that defines each group (e.g. mammals have fur and feed milk to their young)
- Explain why classification helps scientists understand and study the huge variety of life in rainforests

## Lesson: Classifying Rainforest Life

You already know rainforests are packed with plants and animals of every shape and size. Scientists sort all that life into six big groups: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and plants. Once you know a creature's group, you already know a lot about how it lives.

Mammals have fur and feed their babies milk, like jaguars, monkeys, and bats. Birds have feathers and wings, like toucans and macaws. Reptiles have dry, scaly skin and lay eggs on land, like snakes and caimans. Amphibians have smooth, damp skin and need to stay near water, like tree frogs. Insects have six legs and three body parts, like butterflies and ants. Plants make their own food from sunlight, like tall trees and ferns.

*(drawing: 8 rainforest animals sorted: 3 mammals, 2 birds, 2 reptiles, and 1 insect.)*

**Example.** Mia finds a small frog by a rainforest stream. Its skin is smooth and always feels damp. It has no fur, feathers, or scales. Because its skin must stay moist, Mia sorts it into the amphibian group.

**Tip.** When you are not sure which group a creature belongs to, look at its skin or body covering first. Fur means mammal, feathers mean bird, dry scales mean reptile, and damp skin means amphibian.

**Recap.** Look at an organism's features first, like its skin or how it feeds its young, then sort it into its group: mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, insect, or plant.
