## Ready when they can

- Define a coast as where land meets the ocean
- Describe at least two types of coast: sandy, rocky, or muddy
- Name an animal likely found at each type of coast

## Lesson: Coasts and Beaches

A coast is the place where land meets the ocean. A sandy coast is also called a beach.

Coasts are not all the same. You can find sandy, rocky, or muddy coasts. Each kind has its own animals.

*(drawing: Count the kinds of coasts with me: sandy, rocky, muddy. That is 3 kinds, and each one feels different under your feet.)*

**Example.** If you visit a sandy beach, soft sand covers the ground. Little crabs dig and hide in the sand.

**Example.** If you visit a rocky coast, big rocks meet crashing waves. Sea stars cling tightly to the wet rocks.

Muddy coasts are soft, sticky mud that clings to your boots. Sand does not cling like that. Birds poke the mud for food.

**Recap.** Coasts can be sandy, rocky, or muddy, each with its own animals.
