# Coenzymes, Cofactors and the Chemistry They Supply

## Lesson: The tiny helpers that finish tools

Picture a skilled worker missing two tools. Plain protein chains supply acids, bases, and grippers, yet they lack metals and long range electron shuttles. Metal helpers like zinc, magnesium, and iron bring charge punch and redox tricks no chain can match. Small organic helpers shuttle electrons and ferry groups between jobs.

**Example.** Now trace a shortage to its exact victim. Electron shuttles built from one B vitamin drive redox steps, while acid cutting helpers built from another drive cutting steps. Lose the first and redox traffic halts. Lose the second and cutting stops. Each missing helper stalls precisely the step that needs it.

Learn the two half names so labels never fool you. The protein half alone idles until its helper docks, and the complete team with helper aboard does the work. Many helpers derive from vitamins or energy coins and get recycled trip after trip. Couriers link the storing, working, and planning worlds.

**Tip.** Carry this habit into every route you meet. When you learn a family of molecules, learn its assistants too: who carries electrons, who ferries groups, who donates phosphoryl loads, who grips with charge. Helpers finish workbenches that plain chains start.
