# Competition, Niches and What Allows Coexistence

## Lesson: Why rivals can share one world

Two species drawing on the same limiting resource cannot both persist unless something separates them, in space, in time, or in what limits each one. Coexistence needs each species to limit itself more than it limits the other. When that holds, any rise in numbers brings self crowding before it brings victory; when it fails, the stronger competitor excludes the weaker.

**Example.** Warblers divide one tree by feeding height, so each harvests insects from its own zone. Desert rodents divide seeds by size, so each harvests what the other leaves. Name the resource being divided precisely, or the explanation is just a slogan rather than a mechanism.

Resource requirements predict competitive outcomes: the species that can persist on the scarcest supply of the limiting resource usually wins when it runs short. Field removals test the prediction, since release from competition lets the loser rebound and expand. A predator that holds the dominant competitor down can rescue the weaker one, and partners such as nitrogen fixing microbes can tilt the balance by supplying what a plant lacks.

**Tip.** Build every coexistence answer from three parts: state the self limitation condition, name the exact divided resource, and say how a removal would test it. Coexistence is a property of the whole web, not of the pair alone, so always check predators and partners too.
