## Lesson: From slowing microbes to sterile

Sterile has an exact meaning: no living microbes at all, including the toughest forms. Control methods form a ladder from merely slowing growth up to full sterilisation. Heat, radiation, filtration, and chemicals each work by their own mechanism, and no single method suits everything.

Moist heat in an autoclave denatures proteins, dry heat oxidises, and radiation shatters genomes. Filtration traps cells in tiny pores, which sterilises heat sensitive liquids without cooking them. Endospores set the bar for every cycle, since they survive boiling and drying that kill ordinary cells.

Chemicals suit surfaces and tools that heat would ruin. They poison metabolism, break membranes, or denature proteins, but dose, contact time, and dirt load decide whether they kill or only pause growth. Toxicity and residue then decide whether the item is safe to use.

**Tip.** To tell killing from inhibiting, remove the agent and watch. Regrowth means it only inhibited, while nothing growing means it killed. Choose by naming the material, the organism, and why the mechanism fits both.
