## Ready when they can

- State that dinosaurs were real animals, not made up
- Explain that 'extinct' means no living ones are left anywhere
- Distinguish between 'a long time ago' and recent events like last year

## Lesson: Dinosaurs Were Real, Long Ago

Dinosaurs are real animals, unlike dragons in stories. Dinosaurs such as T. rex lived long ago. Birds are dinosaurs that are alive today.

**Example.** Mia holds a toy T. rex. Real T. rex lived long ago and is extinct. Extinct means none of that kind are alive anywhere. Last year and a baby's birth are recent, long after T. rex lived.

*(drawing: T. rex lived long before last year or a baby's birth.)*

**Tip.** Extinct means none of that kind are alive. Birds are alive, so birds are not extinct.

**Recap.** T. rex was real and lived long ago. It is extinct. Birds are dinosaurs alive today.
