## Ready when they can

- Draw a circuit diagram using standard symbols for at least five components
- Interpret a circuit diagram drawn by someone else and describe what the circuit does
- Convert between a physical circuit and its diagram representation

## Lesson: Drawing circuits with the right symbols

Omar's torch works. Two cells, a switch and a bulb form one loop. The class next door wants to build the same torch, but a photo of tangled wires is hard to follow. Omar draws a circuit diagram instead. A circuit diagram uses agreed symbols, not pictures of the real parts, joined by straight lines drawn with a ruler, so readers can trace the connections.

*(drawing: Omar's two-cell torch in loop order. The last wire returns to cell 1. This is a word list, not a circuit diagram. Each part needs its own symbol.)*

Each part has its own symbol. A cell is two lines side by side, one long and one short. For our classroom diagrams, draw wires as straight line segments with a ruler. A bulb is a circle with an X inside. A switch is a gap with a small hinged lever. Open, the lever tilts away from the gap and breaks the loop. Closed, it lies across the gap and completes the loop.

Two more parts turn up often. A motor spins to turn a wheel or a fan. Its symbol is a circle with the letter M inside, so it shares the bulb's circle. A buzzer makes a sound. Its symbol is a half circle, like a dome, sitting on a straight base line.

*(drawing: Each part and its symbol. Bulb and motor share the full circle, so the mark inside tells them apart. The buzzer is only half a circle.)*

**Example.** Omar draws his torch: two cell symbols side by side, a ruled wire across to the switch symbol, another wire to the bulb symbol, and a last wire back to the cells. He draws the switch lever lying across the gap, so his readers know the bulb is meant to be on. The class next door has never seen his torch, but they can build it from the drawing alone.

**Tip.** Keep every symbol the same size, however big or small the real part is. A cell drawn huge because the real batteries are chunky tells the reader nothing extra. Symbols of the same size and straight ruled wires make a diagram easy to rebuild.

**Recap.** A circuit diagram uses shared symbols for its components. Readers who know those symbols can follow the connections, build the circuit and explain what it does.
