## Ready when they can

- Demonstrate the drop, cover, and hold on procedure
- Explain why windows and tall shelves are hazards during shaking and why not to cross a room to reach shelter
- Name a trusted adult to tell if they feel an earthquake

## Lesson: Drop, Cover, and Hold On

An earthquake makes the ground shake. If you are indoors and can get down safely, stay inside. Drop onto your hands and knees. Cover your head and neck with one arm. If a sturdy table or desk is close, crawl under it. Hold a leg with your other hand. Stay protected until the shaking stops.

*(drawing: Use nearby sturdy shelter. Do not run outside during shaking.)*

**Example.** Mia felt her classroom shake. She dropped, covered her head and neck, and crawled under her nearby sturdy desk. She held a desk leg with one hand and kept her other arm over her head and neck. If the desk moved, she would move with it.

If no sturdy table is close, stay low and cover your head and neck with both arms. Do not cross the room for shelter. Glass can break. Tall shelves can tip, and objects can fall. Crawl away from these hazards only if a safer spot is close.

After the shaking stops, ask a trusted adult for help. This might be your parent, teacher, or another adult you know and trust. Follow their directions. Practise the indoor plan with a trusted adult before an earthquake happens.

**Recap.** Indoors: drop, cover your head and neck, and hold on under nearby sturdy shelter. Stay protected until shaking stops, then ask a trusted adult for help.
