## Lesson: Facts set the menu, values pick the meal

Copying a gene inside bacteria is molecular cloning, and making an organism with the same DNA is reproductive cloning. Changing body cells affects only that patient. Changing an embryo, or sperm and egg cells, passes the edit down, so the choice is made for future people who never get a say. That inherited commitment is what separates germline editing from somatic editing.

A gain-of-function experiment has two sides that must never be blended. The technical side asks what the modified agent does and whether it can be measured safely. The value side asks whether the knowledge is worth the risk and who gets to decide. No measurement settles the second question, because it depends on what we owe each other.

**Example.** Ethics lives inside everyday technical choices: what to build, what to measure, who might be helped, and who might be harmed. Teams that notice value questions early still have time to slow down, seek outside review, or pick a safer design. Treating ethics as an end-of-project checklist wastes that window.

**Tip.** Map every proposal onto the review structures that already exist. Institutional review boards weigh human protections, dual-use policy covers work that could be misused, and screening of synthesis orders gates cheap gene assembly. Say which structure covers your experiment and what question you will put to it.
