## Ready when they can

- Name at least three foods that come from rainforests, such as chocolate (cacao), bananas, and Brazil nuts
- Explain that cacao beans grow on trees in the rainforest and are made into chocolate
- Connect their own food choices to rainforest origins by identifying a product they eat that comes from the forest

## Lesson: Foods from the Rainforest

Look at your snacks. Some foods come from rainforests far away. Chocolate, bananas, coffee, and Brazil nuts all grow there.

**Example.** Chocolate starts as cacao beans. Cacao beans grow on trees in the rainforest. Farmers pick the beans and turn them into chocolate.

*(drawing: Chocolate takes a trip. First the cacao beans grow. Then farmers pick them. Last, the beans turn into chocolate.)*

**Example.** Bananas grow on tall plants in tropical forests. Coffee berries ripen in the cool forest shade. Brazil nuts fall from giant rainforest trees.

**Tip.** Next time you eat chocolate, think of the rainforest. Your snack traveled a long way to reach you.

**Recap.** Chocolate, bananas, coffee, and Brazil nuts all come from a rainforest.
