## Lesson: How a fossil forms

Most of the time, when a plant or animal dies, it rots away and nothing is left. But sometimes it gets covered fast by sediment, which is mud, sand, or bits of dirt that settle in layers. That quick covering can save its shape.

**Example.** A dinosaur dies by a riverbank and sinks into soft mud. More mud and sand pile on top of it, year after year. Slowly, minerals from the water soak into the bones and replace them, bit by bit, until the bones turn to stone. The mud around it turns to rock too, so the shape of the dinosaur stays locked inside.

**Tip.** Fossils are rare. Most living things never become one, because they rot away or get eaten before they can be buried. Finding a fossil means the timing was just right.
