# Global Change Ecology: Ranges, Phenology and Regime Shifts

## Lesson: Warming moves zones and splits timings

Every species carries a tolerance range, the conditions where it survives and raises young. A cactus fits the hot desert and a polar bear fits the cold Arctic. Warming moves those matching places, usually toward the poles or up mountainsides. A species that moves or adapts fast enough follows its zone. One whose dispersal lags, or that finds no livable ground within reach, struggles.

Heat also shifts when things happen: flowering, migrating, breeding. Partners shift at different speeds, so a bird arriving on its old schedule can miss insects that now hatch earlier, and one or both partners suffer. Climate change is less a warmer world than a world whose pieces no longer line up.

**Example.** Some systems change abruptly rather than gradually. Corals bleach when hot water drives out the tiny algae that feed them, flipping a crowded reef into a pale quiet one if heat lasts. Kelp forests collapse just as fast under warm water and hungry urchins. Recovery is not simply the reverse of the change.

**Tip.** Do not read slow causes as slow results. A gentle warming can push a system to a tipping point, then the flip looks sudden. To judge a case, name the tolerance zone, name the timing gap, then ask what would lock the new state in place.
