## Ready when they can

- Match animals to their habitats and explain the match using 'adapted to', 'conditions', or 'shelter'
- Correctly use 'habitat' and 'microhabitat' to describe different scales of environment with examples
- Name at least three contrasting habitats and describe what makes each distinctive

## Lesson: Habitat Vocabulary

A habitat is the place where a plant or animal lives. A good habitat gives a living thing everything it needs: food, water, shelter, and space. Shelter is a safe place, like a den. Every habitat also has its own conditions, like how hot, cold, wet, or dry it is. Inside a big habitat, a tiny spot like under a rock is called a microhabitat.

*(drawing: Say each one out loud: woodland, ocean, desert, rainforest, pond. A rainforest is warm and wet, and a pond is full of water.)*

**Example.** A hot desert is a habitat with hot, dry conditions and little water. A fennec fox lives there. Its big ears give off heat, and it needs little water. A polar bear lives in icy places. Thick fur keeps it warm. A rainforest is warm and wet, and a pond is full of water. Each would not fit in the other place because the conditions do not match.

**Tip.** A microhabitat is a tiny spot inside a bigger habitat, like under a rock or inside a rotten log. When you explain why an animal lives somewhere, use words like 'conditions,' 'adapted to,' and 'shelter' instead of just saying 'because it's hot' or 'because it's cold.'

**Recap.** A habitat is a home with the right food, water, shelter, and conditions.
