# Hartree-Fock and What a Basis Set Decides

Treating electrons explicitly means solving for each one in the average field of the others, repeated until the answer stops changing. The orbitals are built from a chosen set of functions, and that choice limits the answer more than most users expect.

## Lesson: Solving for electrons, one field at a time

Hartree-Fock treats each electron as moving in the average field of the others. You guess orbitals, build that field, solve again, and repeat. When the answer stops changing, the cycle has converged.

The average field is an approximation. It leaves out the instant ways electrons dodge each other. The missing piece has a name: correlation energy.

**Example.** Orbitals are built from a chosen basis set, and that choice limits the answer. A minimal set gives each orbital one shape, split-valence adds room to breathe, and polarised sets add lopsided shapes for bonding.

**Tip.** Anions and weak interactions need diffuse functions, which reach far from the nucleus. Without them the extra electron has nowhere to live, and the energy comes out too high.
