# Hormone Classes and Why Their Receptors Sit in Different Places

## Lesson: Fat or water decides the receptor

Hormones fall into chemical families, and the family decides how fast you feel their effect. Peptides and most amines, like adrenaline, dissolve in water and float free in the plasma, acting in seconds. Steroids, built from cholesterol, dissolve in fat and hitch rides on carrier proteins, so their effects unfold over hours instead.

A hormone only works where its receptor sits. Water soluble hormones cannot cross the membrane, so they dock at surface receptors and launch a fast internal relay that acts in seconds but fades quickly. Steroids slip through the membrane and meet receptors inside, often in the nucleus, where they rewrite protein production, so the response starts slowly and lingers.

**Example.** To predict from chemistry, sort the molecule first. A peptide means surface receptors with a quick amplified cascade, while a steroid means inner receptors with slow lasting gene switching. The relay chains amplify too, with each step waking many copies of the next, which is why tiny hormone amounts reshape whole cells.

**Tip.** When you meet a new hormone, ask if it dissolves in water: yes points outside and fast, no points inside and slow.
