## Ready when they can

- Draw a diagram showing light source → light hits object → reflects into eye
- Explain that we see objects because reflected light enters our eyes, not because our eyes send out light
- Use this model to explain why we can't see in total darkness (no light to reflect)

## Lesson: How we see objects

To see an ordinary non-glowing object, light must reach it and some must reflect into your eyes. A book on a lit table is visible because of this source-to-object-to-eye path.

A closed paper book absorbs some incoming light and reflects some. To explain seeing the book, follow the reflected portion from its surface into your eye. The absorbed portion does not travel onward to your eye.

Your eyes receive light for vision. They do not make a beam that lights objects so you can see them. Light can arrive directly from a lit bulb or after reflection from an ordinary object. An eye's surface can itself reflect light.

An opaque card can interrupt a light path. If it blocks all light from a lamp to a toy, and no other light reaches the toy, the toy cannot reflect that lamp's light into your eyes.

Total darkness means no light at all. A shut door or closed curtain does not prove total darkness, since stray light may enter. Eyes can adjust to dim light, but waiting cannot let you see ordinary objects when there is no light.

A glowing lamp is a light source. You can see it when its own light enters your eyes directly. It does not need another lamp to shine on it first.

Being visible does not prove that something makes light. Ordinary fruit reflects light from a source. The reflected light lets you see the fruit; the fruit does not supply its own illumination.

Light reflected from one object can reach another object. A lit rock may therefore help illuminate another cave surface. To see any non-glowing surface, some light must reach it and then reflect into your eyes.

**Recap.** Vision needs light entering your eyes. Sources can send it directly; ordinary objects reflect it. In total darkness, ordinary objects cannot be seen.
