# Hypothalamic and Pituitary Axes and Layered Feedback

Several hormone systems run through three levels, with each level releasing a hormone that drives the next and the final product suppressing both levels above it. That arrangement gives amplification going down and stability coming back.

## Lesson: Three levels, one loop

Several hormone systems run through three levels. The hypothalamus releases a small signal, the pituitary answers with a tropic hormone, and that hormone drives a distant gland such as the thyroid, adrenals, or gonads to release the final product. Each step commands many cells below, so a whisper from the brain becomes a flood in the blood: amplification going down.

**Example.** The adrenal axis shows every layer in one place. Corticotropin releasing hormone from the hypothalamus drives ACTH from the pituitary, and ACTH drives cortisol from the adrenal cortex. Cortisol then damps both upper levels, closing the loop, and that feedback gives stability coming back.

That loop explains two classic patterns. If the target gland itself fails, its product falls, feedback vanishes, and both upper hormones climb while the final one stays low. If instead a patient takes the final hormone as a drug for a long time, the brain reads plenty and shuts its own drive down, so the upper levels and the native gland both go quiet.
