# Indigenous Ecological Knowledge

Understand that indigenous peoples of the rainforest have developed deep ecological knowledge over thousands of years — using plants for medicine, food, and building materials, practising sustainable farming methods like shifting cultivation, and understanding animal behaviour and forest ecology in ways that modern science is only beginning to appreciate

## Ready when they can

- Give at least two examples of indigenous knowledge, such as using specific plants as medicine or practising sustainable farming
- Explain what shifting cultivation is and why it is less harmful to the forest than permanent clearing
- Describe how indigenous knowledge and modern science can work together to protect rainforests

## Lesson: What the forest peoples know

For thousands of years, indigenous peoples have lived in the rainforest and learned an enormous amount about the plants and animals around them. They know which plants can ease a fever, which ones are safe to eat, and which trees make the strongest rope or house posts. This knowledge is passed down from parents to children, again and again.

**Example.** In the Amazon, some indigenous healers know how to use hundreds of different plants as medicine. One plant might calm a stomach ache. Another might help heal a cut. Scientists who visit these communities are often amazed at how much the healers already know, long before any laboratory test is done.

*(drawing: This farming method moves around the forest instead of clearing it all at once, so old patches always get a chance to grow back.)*

**Tip.** This way of farming is called shifting cultivation. A family clears a small patch of forest, grows food there for a few years, then moves on and lets the forest grow back before anyone farms there again. Because the patches are small and get time to recover, this is far less harmful than clearing a huge area for good.

**Tip.** Today, more scientists are working together with indigenous experts. Scientists bring laboratory tests, and indigenous experts bring knowledge built from thousands of years of watching the forest closely. Working together, they are finding new medicines and better ways to protect the rainforest.

**Recap.** Indigenous rainforest peoples have gathered enormous plant and animal knowledge over thousands of years, and scientists are now learning from them to protect the forest.
