## Ready when they can

- Distinguish between inherited and acquired characteristics with a correct example of each
- Use 'variation' correctly to describe differences within a species and explain what causes variation
- Use 'offspring', 'species', and 'trait' correctly in written descriptions of living things

## Lesson: Inherited or acquired?

A trait is a feature, such as fur colour or leaf shape. Genes carry information passed from parents to offspring. They affect inherited characteristics, such as natural eye colour. Genetic means to do with genes. Inherited traits need not be visible at birth.

Acquired characteristics develop through life experiences or surroundings. An injury may leave a scar. Sunlight can cause a suntan. Practice can build a skill or strengthen muscles. These changes are not inherited. Environment means the surroundings and conditions where a living thing lives.

Offspring are the young produced by parents, such as puppies or seedlings. A species is a group of related living things. For many animals, members can have young together that can also grow up and have young. Dogs form one species; cats form another. A breed is a group within a species with shared inherited traits. Labradors and Poodles are dog breeds.

Variation means differences among members of the same species. It can involve genes, environment, or both. Young with the same two parents can inherit different mixes of genes. Experiences can also cause differences: one dog may have an injury scar while another does not. Many traits are affected by both genes and environment.

**Recap.** Genes pass inherited information to offspring. Acquired changes develop during life. Variation means differences within a species and can involve genes, environment, or both.
