# Many-Electron Atoms: Spin, Antisymmetry and Effective Charge

Add a second electron and the equation stops being solvable exactly. Two ideas rescue it: electrons repel each other into a screened, penetrating arrangement, and identical particles obey an exchange rule that the Pauli principle states.

## Ready when they can

- Explains screening and penetration and uses them to say why 4s fills before 3d in a neutral atom but ionises first
- States the antisymmetry requirement and shows how the familiar orbital-filling rule follows from it
- Estimates an effective nuclear charge for a valence electron and predicts a size or ionisation trend from it
- Says why an orbital energy in a many-electron atom depends on both n and the shape quantum number

## Lesson: Many electrons, screened pulls, strict rules

A second electron ends exact solutions, but two ideas rescue you. Inner electrons screen the nucleus, softening its pull on the outer ones. And some waves penetrate: the 4s wave owns a small inner lobe that dives close to the nucleus and feels extra pull that the buried 3d never feels. That is why 4s fills before 3d. Once the atom is built, 3d sinks below 4s, so the 4s electron is also the first to leave.

Electrons also carry spin, a built in twist with only two settings, up or down. That doubles every orbital to two electrons. Deeper still sits antisymmetry: swapping any two electrons must flip the sign of the total wave. The familiar ban follows at once, since no two electrons in an atom may share all four quantum numbers.

**Example.** Guess trends with the effective charge, the nuclear charge minus the shielding. Core electrons shield well and same shell electrons shield poorly, so each step across a row raises the effective pull. Atoms shrink, and removals cost more. A new shell down a group outweighs all that and jumps the size up. The same logic explains aluminium: its lone 3p electron is screened and less penetrating than magnesium 3s pair, so aluminium ionises first.

**Tip.** In big atoms, orbital energy answers to n plus shape together, roughly by n plus l, with famous rebels like chromium and copper. Expect 4s below 3d on the way in and 4s out first on the way out. Whenever a trend puzzles you, estimate the effective charge before memorising anything.

**Recap.** Penetration orders the filling, screening sets the trends, and antisymmetry writes the rules.
