## Ready when they can

- State that Mary Anning lived in England in the early 1800s and hunted for fossils along the coast
- Name at least one of her major discoveries (ichthyosaur or plesiosaur)
- Explain why her work was important — she helped scientists understand that extinct creatures once lived on Earth

## Lesson: Mary Anning, Fossil Hunter

Mary Anning lived in England in the early 1800s, in a seaside town called Lyme Regis. She spent her days walking along the cliffs and beach, searching for fossils hidden in the rocks.

**Example.** When Mary was still a girl, she and her brother found the skeleton of an ichthyosaur, an ancient sea reptile shaped like a dolphin. Later, Mary found a plesiosaur too, a creature with a long neck and flippers. No one had ever seen a whole skeleton like these before.

*(drawing: First Mary found the ichthyosaur, then the plesiosaur. Two whole sea reptile skeletons that amazed the world.)*

Mary's fossils were more than old bones. They proved that strange creatures once swam in seas that covered England, and that those creatures no longer exist anywhere on Earth. This helped scientists start to understand that life on our planet has changed a lot over a very long time.

**Tip.** Back then, many scientists did not give Mary much credit because she was a poor woman. But the fossils she found are still studied in museums today.

**Recap.** Mary Anning hunted fossils along the English coast and found ancient sea reptiles that taught the world that extinct creatures once lived on Earth.
