# Monoclonal Antibodies and What They Are Used For

## Lesson: One antibody, endless copies

Monoclonal means a single specificity. Every copy binds one single epitope, usually with high affinity. A polyclonal mix instead holds many antibodies that can cross-react with lookalike targets, risking false positives and false negatives, so it suits screening only.

**Example.** Factories start in a mouse. Antibody-making B cells are fused with myeloma cells, and the fused hybridomas grow in tissue culture. The myeloma partner divides forever while the B cell partner keeps making its one antibody. That fusion is the whole trick behind a limitless supply of a single specificity.

A lateral flow test turns one binding event into a visible line. Sample flows along the strip, the target sticks to parked antibodies, and trapped markers pile up as a coloured bar. Pregnancy tests run this exact play, and labs stain tissues with the same single-minded grip.

**Tip.** Weigh the therapy like a doctor. Antibody drugs hunt cancer cells wearing the matching marker, which spares most healthy tissue. Yet markers can appear on healthy cells too, and the price is exorbitant. Benefit against side effects and cost decides each treatment.
