## Ready when they can

- Describe the pattern in a suitable circuit: adding cells in series, or using a higher total voltage, can make a bulb brighter or a buzzer louder.
- Explain that cells in series give a larger potential difference, which can transfer more energy to a suitable component.
- Predict the effect of changing the number of cells on a component's behaviour

## Lesson: More batteries, brighter bulb

A cell transfers energy to charge. Cells in series sit one after another in a circuit. Join the positive end of one to the negative end of the next so their voltages add. A suitable bulb may glow brighter as the total voltage rises, because more energy is transferred each second. Stay within the bulb's voltage rating: the voltage it is made for. The loop must be complete and the switch closed. A gap stops current, however many cells you use.

*(drawing: In this test, the same bulb glows more brightly as cells are added in series. The bars show the test's brightness scores, not voltage readings.)*

**Example.** Zara tests one bulb with one cell, then adds a matching cell in series, joining positive to negative so their voltages add. The bulb glows more brightly at the larger total voltage. She checks its rating before another change. Too much voltage may overheat or damage it.

Voltage, also called potential difference, is energy transferred per unit charge. A higher-voltage cell can transfer more energy per unit charge, but the bulb or buzzer must be rated for that voltage. A longer wire supplies no extra voltage and can reduce current, so it is not a way to brighten the bulb.

A suitable buzzer can sound louder at a larger total voltage as more energy is transferred each second. This depends on its design and rating. Too much voltage can damage it. Change one safe variable at a time in a test.

**Recap.** Cells in series give a larger total voltage, so a suitable bulb may glow brighter or a buzzer sound louder. Voltage is energy per unit charge. The loop must be complete and the part rated for it.
