# Neurons & Brain Structure

Explain how neurons transmit signals as electrochemical impulses across chemical synapses; describe how the brain is organised (lobes and functions, limbic system for emotion); and explain neuroplasticity, why learning and practice physically change brain structure, using optical illusions as evidence that the brain constructs reality rather than passively recording it

## Ready when they can

- Describes the neuron-to-neuron signal pathway at a chemical synapse: electrical impulse travels along axon, neurotransmitter crosses the synapse, new impulse begins in the next neuron
- Names the four lobes of the cerebral cortex (frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital) and gives one function for each
- Explains neuroplasticity: repeated neural pathways become stronger and faster, which is the biological mechanism of learning and skill development

## Lesson: How Neurons Talk and Your Brain Rewires Itself

Think about a skill that got easier with practice, like riding a bike. That change starts with your neurons. A neuron sends its message as a tiny electrical pulse, and that pulse races down a long fiber called an axon, all the way to the very end of the cell.

*(drawing: At a chemical synapse, the electrical pulse cannot jump the gap. The neuron releases a chemical called a neurotransmitter, which crosses over and starts a new pulse in the next neuron.)*

Your brain's outer layer is split into four lobes. The frontal lobe handles thinking, decisions, and movement. The parietal lobe processes touch and spatial sense. The temporal lobe handles hearing and memory. The occipital lobe processes what you see. Deeper inside sits the limbic system, which drives emotions like fear and happiness.

**Example.** Think about learning to play piano. The first time you try a chord, the signal between neurons travels slowly and weakly. Practice the same chord night after night, and that pathway gets used again and again. The connection grows stronger and the signal travels faster, so your fingers find the chord almost without thinking. Your brain also builds what you see from learned patterns, so illusions can fool it.

**Tip.** This rewiring is called neuroplasticity. Your brain builds its best guess from learned patterns, and sometimes that guess is wrong.

**Recap.** Neurons talk at chemical synapses through electrical pulses and chemical messengers, different brain lobes handle different jobs, and practice physically strengthens the pathways you use most.
