# Observing with simple equipment

Observe closely using simple equipment such as hand lenses, and use observations to describe, compare, and identify things

## Ready when they can

- Use a hand lens or other simple equipment to make detailed observations
- Describe observations using specific vocabulary (colour, shape, size, texture, pattern)
- Compare two objects based on careful observation, noting similarities and differences

## Lesson: Looking closely with a hand lens

A hand lens helps you see small details. Look through it at a small object. The object can look bigger through the lens.

Colour words tell what colour you see, such as red or green. Shape words tell the shape, such as round. Size words tell how big or small something is.

*(drawing: Move the lens towards or away from the object until the view is clear. Never look at the Sun through a lens.)*

The lens changes how big an object looks. It does not make the object grow. A tiny seed stays the same size when you put the lens down.

**Example.** Texture tells how a surface feels. A safe leaf may feel smooth or bumpy. Use the word that matches what you notice. Ask an adult before touching an unknown plant or animal.

To see tiny lines on a petal, look through a hand lens. If the view is blurry, move the lens slowly until the lines look clear.

**Example.** Mia compares two leaves. Both are green. One feels smooth and one feels bumpy. Comparing means finding what is the same and what is different.

When you compare two shells, check more than one feature. Look at their colour, shape, size and patterns. Check texture only if an adult says the shells are safe to touch.

Some patterns are too small to see at a quick glance. Look closely before saying an object has no pattern. A hand lens can help. Say what you saw, such as 'I did not see any spots.'

**Recap.** Look closely, describe what you see, and compare carefully.
