# Ocean Animal Adaptations

Understand that ocean animals have special adaptations for their environment: streamlined bodies for fast swimming, camouflage to hide from predators, blubber to keep warm in cold seas, and tentacles or suckers to catch prey

## Ready when they can

- Name at least three different ocean animal adaptations
- Explain how each adaptation helps the animal survive in its environment
- Connect an adaptation to the specific challenge it addresses (cold, predators, catching food)

## Lesson: Bodies built for the ocean

Every ocean animal needs food, shelter, and water that feels right. Adaptations are special body parts or tricks that help with those needs, to keep warm, to hide, or to catch food.

**Example.** A seal has a thick layer of fat under its skin called blubber. Blubber traps body heat, so the seal stays warm even in freezing ocean water.

**Example.** An octopus can change the color and pattern of its skin in seconds. This is called camouflage, and it helps the octopus blend in with rocks so predators swim right past it. It helps it hide, not stay warm.

Fish like tuna and sharks have smooth, torpedo-shaped bodies. This streamlined shape lets them move fast through water to catch food or get away from danger.

*(drawing: Count an octopus's arms: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Every arm is lined with round suckers that grip tight to hold prey.)*

**Tip.** Look at an octopus's arms. Each one is lined with round suckers. The suckers grip tight, so slippery prey like crabs and fish cannot wiggle free.

**Recap.** Ocean animals survive using adaptations like blubber for warmth, camouflage for hiding, and streamlined bodies or suckers for catching food.
