# Organogenesis and the Model Organisms That Made It Visible

Organs form by a small repertoire of moves repeated in different places: fold a sheet, make a tube, branch it, then kill the cells in between. Most of what is known came from a handful of organisms chosen because they are transparent, fast, or easy to mutate, and that choice shapes what is known.

## Lesson: Fold, tube, branch, prune

You already know cells divide, move, and die. Organs form from a small repertoire of moves repeated in new places. A flat sheet folds, the folded sheet seals into a tube, the tube branches, and finally the cells in between are removed.

**Example.** The neural tube begins as a flat sheet that rolls up and seals into a pipe, which later becomes brain and spinal cord. Fingers are carved the opposite way: the hand starts as a paddle and programmed death removes the webbing between digits.

Most of this came from a handful of model organisms picked because they are transparent, fast, or easy to mutate. A see-through fish embryo lets you watch organs form live, while a fast-breeding fly lets you break genes and read the effect.

**Tip.** Match the organism to the question. Watch shaping live in the transparent one, screen many mutants in the fast one, and confirm mammal details in the mouse. No single organism answers everything, and the choice shapes what you can learn.
