# Oxidative Phosphorylation and Chemiosmosis

Electrons from the reduced carriers pass along a chain, and the energy released pumps protons across the inner membrane. Protons flowing back through ATP synthase make most of the cell's ATP.

## Ready when they can

- Explains what the electron transfer chain does with the energy it releases.
- Describes the proton gradient and says where ATP synthase sits in it.
- Says what oxygen does at the end of the chain and what happens without it.

## Lesson: The Battery and the Motor

This chain makes most of the ATP that powers your heartbeat, your thinking and every muscle you move. Reduced NAD and FAD hand their electrons to carriers in the inner mitochondrial membrane. As electrons hop down the chain, the released energy pumps protons into the intermembrane space, piling them up like a stored battery of energy.

ATP synthase sits in the inner membrane and spends that battery. Protons rush back through it, and the enzyme bolts phosphate onto ADP to make ATP. This coupling is chemiosmosis, and each reduced NAD funds roughly two to three ATP this way.

**Example.** Oxygen works as the clerk at the end of the line. It accepts spent electrons and joins them with protons to form water. Without oxygen the chain backs up, the gradient collapses, and ATP output crashes. A puncture that lets protons leak drains that battery, so ATP synthesis stops even while electrons still flow.

**Tip.** Keep the two halves apart in your head: the chain builds the gradient, chemiosmosis spends it. A poison that punctures the membrane drains the battery, so ATP synthesis stops even while electrons still flow.

**Recap.** Electrons pump protons up, protons flow back through ATP synthase, and oxygen keeps the line moving by clearing electrons as water.
