## Ready when they can

- Label roots, stem, leaves, and flowers on a diagram of a flowering plant
- Name the main parts of a tree: roots, trunk, branches, leaves
- Explain that roots take in water and leaves catch sunlight

## Lesson: Parts of a Plant

You know plants and trees. Now let's look closer. Every part of a plant has a job.

*(drawing: Roots are at the bottom. The flower is at the top.)*

Roots dig into the soil. They take in water for the plant. Leaves spread out wide. They catch sunlight to make food.

**Example.** Zara looks at a big oak tree. She points to the roots, then the trunk. Next she points to the branches and leaves. The tree has parts, just like a flower.

**Tip.** Trees use different names for some parts. A tree's stem is called a trunk. But every part still has the same job.

**Recap.** Roots drink water, leaves catch sunlight, and stems or trunks hold the plant up.
