# Plants and animals in their habitats

Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants and animals and the places they live, connecting organism needs to habitat features

## Ready when they can

- Use a simple model (drawing, diagram) to show how a habitat provides what an organism needs
- Match at least three organisms to their habitats and explain why each needs that specific place
- Describe what would happen if an organism were placed in a habitat that doesn't meet its needs

## Lesson: Every living thing has a habitat

A habitat is a home for a plant or animal. It gives food, water, and a safe place to live. Different living things need different habitats.

*(drawing: Every habitat gives 3 things: food to eat, water to drink, and a safe place to live. Tap to count them.)*

You can draw a picture to show a habitat. Draw the animal, then draw what it needs around it. This is called a model.

**Example.** A fish lives in water. Water gives the fish oxygen and food. A cactus lives in the desert. The desert has little rain, and cactus does not need much water.

A polar bear lives where it is icy and cold. Thick fur keeps it warm. A frog lives near a pond. It needs wet skin to breathe. A camel lives in hot, dry sand. It stores water in its body.

**Tip.** If a fish is out of water, it cannot breathe. If a cactus gets too much rain, its roots can rot. The right habitat keeps living things safe and healthy.

**Recap.** A habitat gives a living thing what it needs to live.
