# Population Growth Curves and Carrying Capacity

A population grows slowly, then fast, then levels off as limiting factors bite. Carrying capacity is read off the curve, and density-dependent factors are told from density-independent ones by how they scale.

## Lesson: Boom, Brake, Balance

A new colony starts slowly in the lag phase while individuals settle. Numbers then explode in the exponential phase, doubling while resources seem endless. Growth brakes as food runs short, and the curve flattens at carrying capacity, labelled K.

Density-dependent brakes bite harder with crowding: competition, predation, and disease. Density-independent hits strike regardless of numbers: frost, flood, or fire. Real curves wobble because populations feel both at once.

**Example.** Bacteria doubling hourly in rich broth trace a J-curve with no limit. Yeast in a flask bend into an S-curve as they near K. When you meet a new graph, first ask which shape it is, then find what limits each part.

**Tip.** Read K where the curve levels out in the stationary phase, where births equal deaths. Remember the ceiling moves with seasons, fires, and rivals, so real tops wobble instead of sitting flat.
