# Rainforest Food Webs

Understand how energy and nutrients flow through a rainforest food web — from plants (producers) to herbivores (primary consumers) to predators (secondary consumers) — and that decomposers like fungi and insects break down dead material on the forest floor, recycling nutrients back into the soil for plants to use again

## Ready when they can

- Construct a simple rainforest food chain with at least three levels: producer → herbivore → predator
- Explain the role of decomposers in breaking down dead material and returning nutrients to the soil
- Use the terms producer, consumer, and decomposer correctly

## Lesson: Rainforest Food Webs

A food web shows who eats whom in the rainforest. Energy starts with the sun, moves into plants, then into the animals that eat plants, and then into the animals that eat those animals.

*(drawing: The fig tree makes food from sunlight, the monkey eats the fruit, and the jaguar hunts the monkey.)*

**Example.** Zara traces a food chain in the rainforest. A Brazil nut tree grows fruit using sunlight. A monkey eats the fruit. A jaguar creeps through the shadows and hunts the monkey. Energy moves from tree to monkey to jaguar.

When a plant or animal dies, it does not just disappear. Decomposers, like fungi and tiny insects, break the dead material into simple nutrients. Rain washes those nutrients into the soil, where tree roots soak them up again.

**Tip.** Three words help you remember the food web: a producer makes its own food, a consumer eats other living things, and a decomposer breaks down dead material.

**Recap.** Energy flows from producer to consumer, and decomposers recycle everything that is left back into the soil for new plants to use.
