# Reading a Paper and Its Supporting Information

The claim is in the paper and the evidence is usually in the supporting information. Reading well means checking the procedure, the characterisation and the controls against the claim, and noticing what has been left out.

## Ready when they can

- Extracts the central claim of a paper and lists what would have to be true for it to hold
- Checks reported characterisation against the structure that was claimed
- Identifies a missing control and says what alternative explanation it would have excluded
- Separates what the data show from what the discussion asserts

## Lesson: Claims in, evidence out

Every claim is a statement someone wants you to accept, like a new material conducting at room temperature. Ask what would have to be true for it to hold: repeatable measurement, pure sample, evidence matching the claim exactly. Then read laterally: leave the page and see what other trusted sources say about the same claim.

Separate what the numbers show from what the discussion asserts. One famous feed study shifted the words people typed a little, then claimed that emotions themselves spread like a contagion. Word counts are not feelings: the users never agreed to join, and nobody measured how anyone felt.

**Example.** Test each claim by picturing what the world would look like if it were true. If cells divide on a timer, cells fed rich food should end up bigger, since they grow faster in the same time. If cells divide at a set size, size should hold steady as growth speed changes. The measurement that splits those pictures is the control that matters.

**Tip.** For a catalysis paper, state the claim in one line, name the two experiments that support it, and hunt the missing one. A missing control names the rival explanation the work left alive, and the procedure plus characterisation live in the supporting information, not the headline.
