# Reading a Primary Paper: The Claim, the Figure and the Missing Control

A paper's abstract states a claim that only one or two of its figures actually support. This stop finds the figure the claim rests on, checks what its controls exclude, and separates what was shown from what was inferred.

## Ready when they can

- State a paper's central claim in one sentence and name the figure that tests it
- Identify a control that is absent and say which alternative explanation it would have excluded
- Separate the results the data support from the conclusions the discussion asserts

## Lesson: Reading a paper for what it really shows

You open a paper by splitting it into parts. The abstract sums up the big claim in one sentence. The methods say what was actually done. The results hold the figures, and the discussion explains what the authors think it all means.

You pin the claim to its figure. A paper may show many panels, but only one or two carry the central claim. You find that figure, you state what comparison it makes, and you ask which control or comparison is missing.

**Example.** You read an abstract claiming a molecule cures a disease in mice. The key figure shows treated mice improving, but no control group receiving everything except the molecule. You conclude the data show improvement, not cure by the molecule, until that control exists.

**Tip.** You sort every sentence into shown versus inferred. The results report what was measured, and those are the facts. The discussion holds inferences, the authors best explanations that sometimes run ahead of the data. You trust the front page and question the opinion section.
