# Reconstructing Ancient Ecosystems

Reconstruct an ancient ecosystem using multiple independent lines of evidence: isotope analysis of teeth to infer diet and migration, bone histology (growth rings) to estimate age and growth rate, coprolite chemistry for diet, and palaeobotany for habitat — understanding that palaeontology is an evidence-synthesis discipline

## Ready when they can

- Explains how stable oxygen isotope ratios in teeth shift with geographic location, allowing detection of seasonal migration
- Explains how annual growth rings in bone cross-sections reveal growth rate and approximate age at death
- Describes how combining evidence from teeth isotopes, coprolites, and fossil plant assemblages builds a richer picture of ancient ecology than any single source alone

## Lesson: Reading Bones and Teeth Like a Diary

You can't watch a live dinosaur, so palaeontologists read clues left behind in fossils instead. Teeth, bones, fossilised dung, and fossilised plants each hold a piece of the story. No single clue tells you the whole picture, but put several together and you can rebuild what an ancient ecosystem was really like.

*(drawing: A tooth grows in layers, and each layer locks in the oxygen isotope level of the water the dinosaur drank that season. A big jump between layers, like here, means the water source changed, a sign the animal travelled somewhere new.)*

*(drawing: Slice a bone and you can see rings, one ring for each year of growth, just like a tree trunk. This bone shows seven rings, so the animal was around seven years old when it died.)*

**Example.** In one real case, scientists studying a plant-eating dinosaur found three separate clues that all pointed the same direction. Oxygen isotopes in the teeth shifted with the seasons, showing the animal moved between two regions. Fossilised dung, called coprolite, was packed with pollen from a plant that only grew in the lowlands. Nearby fossil plant beds matched that same lowland pollen. Three different kinds of evidence lined up, so the migration story became convincing.

**Tip.** Don't trust one shifting isotope reading by itself, diet or illness can cause a similar shift. Look for several independent clues that agree, isotopes, coprolites, and plant fossils together, before accepting a big claim like migration.

**Recap.** Bones, teeth, dung, and plants each hold one piece of the puzzle, and palaeontologists rebuild an ancient ecosystem by fitting every independent clue together, not by trusting any single one alone.
