# Recording data with diagrams and graphs

## Ready when they can

- Choose and create an appropriate graph type for the data (bar chart, line graph, scatter graph)
- Draw graphs with correctly labelled axes, appropriate scales, and accurate plotting
- Use classification keys and scientific diagrams to present complex findings

## Lesson: Picking the right graph

As your investigations get more complex, one type of chart will not always fit your data. A bar chart is for data that comes in separate groups, like types of animal or favourite colours, so its bars do not touch. Line graphs, scatter graphs, and classification keys each do a different job. Picking the right one helps other people understand what you found.

A line graph is different. It shows something changing over time, like a plant's height measured every week. You plot each point, then join them with a line so you can see the trend.

**Example.** A scientist measures the leaf length and leaf width of ten leaves. She wants to see if the two measurements are related, so she plots each leaf as a dot without joining them. This is a scatter graph.

That is a classification key. It sorts living things step by step, so a busy set of findings becomes easy to follow. A labelled scientific diagram does the same job for a single specimen: every part you looked at gets a line and a name.

Whatever graph you draw, label both axes with what you measured and the units, and put numbers on the scale. Without the axis labels a reader cannot tell what the numbers mean. Without a scale, a tall bar cannot be read as a value at all.
