# Respiration: Energy Yield, Oxygen Debt and Fermentation

Aerobic respiration releases far more energy per glucose molecule than anaerobic respiration, which is why hard exercise builds an oxygen debt. Covers lactic acid, the recovery period, and fermentation in yeast.

## Ready when they can

- Writes both word equations and says which releases more energy per glucose molecule.
- Explains what the oxygen debt is and what the body does afterwards to repay it.
- Compares anaerobic respiration in muscle with fermentation in yeast, including the different products.

## Lesson: Why sprinters keep panting

Aerobic respiration burns glucose fully with oxygen into carbon dioxide, water and around thirty ATP per molecule. Muscles at rest sip this steadily. When exercise raises demand, breathing quickens and output scales.

Sprinting outruns oxygen delivery, so muscles buy top-up energy without oxygen: just two ATP plus lactate. Lactate burns and forces slowdown. Afterwards you pant to repay the oxygen debt: extra oxygen clears lactate and restocks stores.

**Example.** Yeast solves the same shortage differently. Its fermentation turns the same starting material into ethanol and carbon dioxide instead of lactate, which raises bread and brews beer. Both tricks recycle carriers so the first energy steps keep running.

**Tip.** Training pushes the switch point later, because fitter bodies deliver oxygen faster. Block oxygen fully and the final energy stage jams within seconds. That urgency is why breathing matters more than eating.

**Recap.** Oxygen pays about thirty ATP, its absence pays two plus debt, and panting afterwards settles the bill.
