# Savanna & Grassland Animals

Explore animals of the grasslands and savanna — lions, zebras, wildebeest, elephants, cheetahs in African savanna; bison and prairie dogs in American grasslands — understanding why large herds form on open grasslands and how predators and prey interact in these wide-open spaces

## Ready when they can

- Names at least 5 grassland/savanna animals
- Explains that herding provides safety in numbers against predators
- Describes the predator-prey relationship (e.g., lions hunt zebras)
- Knows grasslands/savannas are wide-open habitats with few trees

## Lesson: Animals of the Open Grasslands

Grasslands and savannas are wide, flat lands covered in grass, with only a few trees here and there. Since there's nowhere to hide, animals here live in ways that keep them safe or help them hunt. Africa's savanna is home to lions, zebras, wildebeest, elephants, and cheetahs. Far away in North America, wide grasslands called prairies are home to bison and prairie dogs.

*(drawing: Zebra herds are often much bigger than lion prides. More zebras means more eyes watching for danger.)*

**Example.** A pride of lions creeps low through the tall grass, staying hidden. A big herd of zebras grazes nearby. One zebra lifts its head and spots the lions moving. It stomps and snorts, and the whole herd bolts together. Because so many zebras were watching in different directions, the lions lost their chance to sneak up close.

**Tip.** Far from Africa, prairie dogs use a similar trick. They live in big underground towns and take turns standing guard. When a hawk or coyote comes near, the guard barks a warning and everyone dives to safety.

**Recap.** Grasslands are wide open with few places to hide, so many animals there live and watch for danger together in groups.
