## Lesson: Shaping life slowly or in one jump

Selective breeding picks parents with wanted traits and breeds them, round after round. Dairy cows, wheat and dogs all came from millennia of picked parents. It works because offspring resemble parents, and each round shifts the herd a little. That is why it takes generations.

Breeding for one trait has a cost. Mating close relatives, called inbreeding, lets hidden flaws surface. Breeders outcross to unrelated stock regularly to refresh the variation they keep selecting from.

Genetic engineering moves a gene from one organism straight into another in one jump. Bacteria given the human insulin gene brew human medicine, and crops gain pest resistance in a single generation. No breeding scheme could do this, since bacteria hold no human genes to select from.

**Tip.** Compare the two on range and time. Breeding reshuffles genes inside a species over generations. Engineering crosses species in one step. Debates weigh the same scales: who gains, who risks and who decides, case by case.
